‘Orange Is the New Black’ Season 6 Promises a Brighter Future

The new trailer gives hope to all those who couldn’t finish the previous season.

Orange Is the New Black is the epitome of an emotional rollercoaster. Anyone who recommends the show has to preface it with “It’s so good. But it’s going to ruin you.” Except, when the show was first recommended to me, a friend prefaced it with “It made me want to be a lesbian.” This show has power. With deaths of inmates, overdoses, relationships gone awry, and constant fights and threats, Netflix does an incredible job at keeping audiences entertained, and sometimes angry, nonstop for each episode. However, something went wrong in Season 5.

Spoilers Below

Season 4 ends with the unfortunate and heartbreaking death of Poussey Washington (Samira Wiley) after she’s accidentally suffocated by a guard. This leads to a riot led by her best friend, Taystee (Danielle Brooks), which is partly caused by Poussey’s death but also by the unfair treatment that the inmates have received throughout the entirety of the show. It’s sickening but leaves viewers anxious for Season 5 as the hour and 17-minute Season 4 finale ends with Dayanara (Dascha Polanco) getting ahold of a guard’s gun.

As Season 5 begins, viewers are excited to see how the riot will turn out. But, it feels like it takes forever to get an answer. What was once anxiousness in the pit of my stomach was now boredom, as I never quite finished Season 5. My friends and family who also watch the show wonder the same thing I do. What happened? Was there too much going on at once? Were there too many characters to keep track of? Were we losing sight of the whole reason this story was taking place? Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) may be one of the most unlikable characters on the show, but we’re involved with Litchfield because of her.

Season 5 did, however, bring forward some unlikely friendships that we might not have gotten to see if it wasn’t for the riot. Blanca (Laura Gomez) and Red (Kate Mulgrew) being one of them. It also brought forward some failing relationships that the inmates had with the outside world. After announcing her pregnancy to her husband from the roof of the prison, Lorna Morello (Yael Stone) is left rejected and heartbroken as he flees the Litchfield parking lot. It’s these kinds of things that make Season 5 seem almost worth it.

But, now the Season 6 trailer brings hope. While I didn’t finish Season 5, it’s not hard to understand that the inmates were sent to Litchfield Max following the riot and destruction of the prison that they had resided in for years.
