What’s New to Stream on Netflix for July 2018

Here’s what’s coming to Netflix this month!

Some people spend their days arguing over the merits of Netflix and how it’s “killing cinema” as we know it, but the rest of us know better. It’s just one more way to re-watch the movies we already love and find new ones to cherish. This month sees plenty of both hitting the service.

The complete list of movies and shows hitting Netflix this month — July 2018 — is below, but first I’m going to highlight a few that stand apart from the bunch.

Netflix Pick of the Month

I’m just going to state this right up front — Scream 4 (2011) is the best Scream sequel. It has the second smartest script of the franchise, features some killer gore effects, balances the terror and humor extremely well, and manages to include the only kill of the series that’s actually emotionally affecting. Of course I’m talking about Hayden Panettiere’s Kirby Reed. (Sorry Randy.) It hits Netflix on July 7th, so give it a watch and realize I’m right.

Gone Baby Gone

Two perfect movies hit the service this month, and while you’ve probably seen them both they’re worth watching again (and again). Jurassic Park (1993) is a pop masterpiece of human hubris and dangerous dinosaurs, and while the four sequels vary in quality and fun Steven Spielberg’s original remains a terrifically great time at the movies. Ben Affleck’s Gone Baby Gone (2007) arrives on July 12th and is a full-on masterpiece of a thriller delivering exciting sequences of action, suspense, and tension as well as an emotional gut punch of an ending.

Netflix Originals vs the Apocalypse

How It Ends

As is quickly becoming the norm over at Netflix this month’s new arrivals feature quite a Netflix Originals. Cargo  was a critical hit for them earlier, and now they’re bring two new post-apocalyptic thrillers home too. How It Ends (2018) is first onto the box starting July 13th, and it follows a young man forced to travel a danger-strewn landscape with his father-in-law (what a nightmare!) in an attempt to get back home to his pregnant wife. Extinction (2018) happens on July 27th and drops another worried father into an apocalyptic situation, but this time he discovers an untapped strength that might come in handy if he wants to protect his family.

Remember When We Liked Johnny Depp?

Finding Neverland

Sure he’s doing an accent in Chocolat (2000), but unlike most of Depp’s performances from the past decade it never crosses over into obnoxiousness. The film itself is beautiful, the romance is powerful, and you can never go wrong with Juliette Binoche. Finding Neverland (2004) sees him playing a rare “normal” role (ie no accents, costumes, prosthetics, etc) in a film that delivers one of the most tear-inducing ending since My Life (1993).
